Layout

UPDATE, Oct 3, 2020: Luckily, we are back with one more ‘way’ which can let you change or switch back to the old Facebook design on the desktop now. Facebook is still giving its users a chance to change back to the old layout. Those users own a Facebook page can now go ahead and switch back to the classic mode.

Change back to old Facebook design via page

  • Head to the page that you own on Facebook.
  • After the page is loaded, look at the right sidebar.
  • You will see this text, “If you’d like, you can switch to the classic Facebook.com for 48 hours to manage your Page”, right above Home.
  • Hit the Switch Now button.
  • A window will pop-up asking you the reason to switch back to old Facebook design. Give a reason or just click on skip.

Congratulation! you are back to old Facebook. However, we cannot guarantee how many attempts you can make to change back the design once it’s reverted in 48 hours. But for now, this is the only official way.

Below are some unofficial ways (that we do not recommend).

UPDATE, Sept 25, 2020: Facebook no longer allows users to switch back to the classic old design. The new layout is the default and only option you have. There is no way to go back. If you are among people who really hate the new design, you have to rely on third-party plugins and extensions to switch back the classic Facebook design.

Old

Yes, there are still a few ways to go back to the old layout. But none of them are recommended by Facebook. If things work out fine for you, great. But if something goes wrong, you are on your own. Facebook or Insider Paper take no responsibility for the loss of data or password due to the use of the options described below. If you are desperate, you could give them a try.

Before we dive in, you should know that Facebook could change its settings anytime in the near future to prevent the plugins/workarounds from taking you back to the old design. Also, some of the features in Facebook might not work as intended.

1. Trick Facebook into believing that you are using an old browser

The social networking giant still shows the classic layout on old web browsers. If you can somehow make it believe that you are using an old browser, you can enjoy the classic design. There are many browser extensions that, once installed, change your browser version that is sent to Facebook. So, the social network believes you are on an old browser.

Some popular browser extensions that serve the purpose are RevertSite, Old Layout, and Switch to Classic Design on Facebook. We do not personally know the developers of any of these extensions. Neither have we verified their security measures.

2. Use the basic mobile version of Facebook

You can use the basic mobile version of Facebook to access the old design. Go to https://mbasic.facebook.com/ to access it.

UPDATE, Aug 18, 2020: After announcing its new website design in early 2019, Facebook had given you more than a year to fall in love with it. At the same time, the social network gave you the option to switch back to the classic old Facebook design.

If you want to give your Facebook account the old feel, check out the steps described below. But it’s going to last only a few more days. Facebook has decided to get rid of the old design for good. You will no longer have the option to switch back to the old design.

More than a billion users had grown accustomed to Facebook’s classic blue icon. The social networking giant had chosen the blue color because Mark Zuckerberg is red-green color blind and blue is the color he sees the most clearly.

Facebook has updated its support page, saying that the old website design will disappear in September. The company enabled the new design by default in May this year, but was giving users the option to switch back to the old Facebook design. Come September there will no longer be such an option.

If you try to switch to old design right now, you’ll get a warning that “the classic Facebook will no longer be available starting in September.” Also, many users have received notifications on the website that the classic interface is going to retire in September.

The new interface is faster, simpler, cleaner, and offers an immersive experience. It also prominently displays Groups, Marketplace, and Game sections.

PREVIOUS UPDATES

Recall that Facebook promised to offer a redesign for its website and mobile apps at the F8 2019. Although its mobile apps started receiving the update almost immediately, its web has since waited for the update to come. Now, it looks like the new update, including new dark mode, has finally rolled out to the web. In this article, we’ll be looking at how you can switch to the new Facebook design. We will also look at how you can switch back to the Classic Facebook design – in case you end up not liking the new one.

What’s Special About Facebook’s New Redesigned Website?

Facebook

Last week, Facebook released its new interface update for its desktop version. Now, a lot of users are getting invitations to try out the new interface. Before you consider switching, here are some of the features that come with the new design.

  • The new update provides the desktop version with a look similar to that of mobile apps.
  • It enables users to create new events, pages, and ads, with ease.
  • It also comes with a dark mode feature, which helps to reduce eye fatigue and provide better contrast and readability.
  • With the new update, you can easily locate videos, games, and groups.

In case you’re interested in switching to the new interface, here’s a step by step guide for you. Also, if you’re skeptical about it, you can also try it out. I’ll also provide you with a guide to help you change back to the Classic Facebook design in case you don’t like it.

How To Switch Back To Classic Facebook Look / Design

Without a doubt, not everybody will like the new Facebook interface. Since it’s a newly added design, you can expect that it’ll come with some issues.

In case you don’t like the new Facebook interface, here are a few steps that can help you switch back to the Classic Facebook design.

  • Go to the top right corner of your page and tap on the circle where your image profile is located.
  • A menu button will appear, where you can select the “Switch to classic Facebook”.
  • In case you also want to disable the dark mode feature, you should check for the dark mode button and toggle it off.

After that, you might want to give some feedback to help Facebook get better with the new feature. While doing that, Facebook will request for your comment and ask you to rate its Beta update on a scale of 1 to 5. Furthermore, it’ll also ask you while you’re switching back to the classic mode by providing you with the following options:

  • Too slow to load
  • Missing feature
  • Don’t like the look
  • Difficult to learn
  • Too hard to use
  • Can’t find things

As soon as you submit your feedback, you’ll be able to switch back to the classic Facebook design.

On the new Facebook design, the FBP link for opening the FBP options screen is in a new location (see screenshot above) Due to complicated technical reasons, it is now located next to the search box at the top left of the screen. There is also another way to open the FBP options screen, and that is the F.B. Purity link below the Status Update box, in the FBP info bar, as shown below:

Known Issues:

When attempting to use the new “Switch to old Facebook design” option (or on updating to the new version in the case of Firefox) you may be presented with a dialog asking you for new permissions for the extension.

A Permission window may pop up the first time you use FBP’s Switch to Old Facebook Design Option

These are required by the browser extension API systems in order to use the User Agent switching functionality. Rest assured that FBP does not store or transmit user data or Facebook anywhere, as explained on the FBP Privacy page. If you do not allow the permissions, the Revert option will not work, so click “Allow”.

Due to Facebooks extensive changes to their website, some of FBP’s functionality does not yet work on the new Facebook design, and some of it may never work on it, as Facebook have tried to make it extremely difficult for extension developers to work their magic on the site. I will persevere and try and fix up more of FBP’s functionality, however if there is a particular part of FBP’s functionality that you are missing in the new Facebook design, I would suggest you switch back to the old Facebook design, either using Facebook’s “Switch to Facebook Classic” menu option, or if that’s not possible, use the FBP option shown in the image above, or if that’s not available to you, add a separate User Agent switcher extension to your browser, and set your browser’s User Agent to either “Safari 10” or “Chrome 48” (if there are not presets in the extension, you may need to look up (google) the exact text for those User Agents)

Another known issue, due to Facebook making it harder to develop extensions for the site, more of FBP’s functionality is now dependent on the Facebook language setting, so if you find some functionality is not working correctly, try setting your Facebook language to “English” (US or UK) and see if that fixes it.

FBP’s Auto Hide post feature works a bit differently on the new Facebook design, I couldn’t get it to auto hide the posts properly without problems, so at present it just auto hides the post itself without clicking the “hide post” menu button. The interesting thing about hiding posts with the Facebook menu on the new Facebook design is that they still haven’t fixed the bug where using the hide post menu item only hides the post until the page is refreshed. There is one change from the old design though, and that is once you have clicked the “Hide Post” menu item, then reloaded the page, the post will come back, but the hide post menu item will no longer be available, so Facebook is clearly recording the fact you have clicked the hide post button, but are just not honouring your request to hide it.

Sometimes the FBP link will not show up in the top navigation bar, if that occurs, reloading the page may sometimes make it re-appear, I need to look into whats causing that. If the FBP link is missing in the top bar, and you are on the Newsfeed page you should still be able to open the FBP options screen by clicking the “F.B. Purity” link in the bar just below the Status update box that shows which posts have been hidden.

If you have a problem with a text entry box in Messenger missing, with the new Facebook design, try un-ticking the “Hide Chat box” FBP optioon.

The Watch Vid (No Ads) link function is not yet working on the new Facebook design, if you require this functionality, switch back to the old Facebook design.

If you are using Chrome or Edge, but cannot see the FBP icon/button in the extensions toolbar, the icon may be hidden under the “jigsaw piece” menu, as shown in this screenshot:

If you click the jigsaw piece button, then click the pin icon next to the fbp menu item, it should put the fbp icon back in the extensions toolbar, so you will be able to use the revert to old facebook design option.

If you are using Firefox but cannot see the FBP icon/button in the extensions toolbar, the icon may be hidden behind the “Overflow” menu button (double right pointing chevron) as shown in the following screenshot:

]
or if the Overflow button is not showing either, you may need to customize the toolbar to add the Overflow button, then you should be able to access the FBP button.

Important Information for Chrome Users of F.B. Purity

FBP Chrome Update Process: After FB Purity for Chrome is first installed, you should from then on receive automatic updates (Chrome checks for extension updates once every 5 hours). If you don’t want to wait, and know an update is available you can force an update by turning on “Developer Mode” on the Chrome extensions management page, then clicking the “Update” button at the top of the page (make sure you don’t have any facebook tabs open, so Chrome can unload the existing version first).

Important information for Firefox users of F.B. Purity

Once you have installed the Firefox version of FB Purity, it should auto-update itself when I release new versions. Firefox users who are getting the “Connection Failure” error when trying to install FBP should know this is a known bug in Firefox that occurs if you are using Antivirus software that monitors your web browsing. The work-around, as mentioned in the FAQ is to right click on the install button, then select save, then install the extension by dragging and dropping it on to the Firefox extension management page. This Firefox bug can also prevent Firefox from automatically updating FBP when new versions are released.

Important Information for Microsft Edge users of F.B. Purity

If you install the official Edge FBP extension from the Microsoft Edge store, it should auto-update when new versions are released in future. Be aware however that the Microsoft Store has a slow (manual) approval process for accepting extension updates, so the new version will not show up in the Microsoft Store for a day or two after I release an extension update.

Important Information for Opera users of F.B. Purity

The FB Purity extension for Opera needs to be installed via the official Opera Add-ons site, which is where the green Install F.B. Purity button will take you to. Once it has been installed from there, whenever updates to the FBP extension are uploaded and approved on the Opera extensions site (this process can take a few days after an FBP update is published), the version of FBP in your browser should auto-update at some point. It can sometimes be triggered by closing the browser, waiting a bit and re-opening it, there is also an “Update Extensions Now” button on the Opera extensions management page, which if clicked will update all your Opera extensions to the latest versions. In order for the extension to update you may need to first close any open Facebook tabs.

All other FBP users can update to the latest version of F.B. Purity by clicking the green “Install F.B. Purity” button on the FB Purity Install page on FBPURITY.COMand then following the on screen instructions.
